Internationalisierung durch Studierendenaustausch, Summer Schools und gemeinsame Forschung für die Sustainable Development Goals

Zum 1. März dieses Jahres hat das Projekt „Research and Lecture Exchange for Sustainable Management (ReLeES)“ seine Arbeit aufgenommen. Projektpartner sind die Bahir Dar University (BDU), in Bahir Dar, Äthiopien und die Hochschule für Forstwirtschaft in Rottenburg. Finanziert wird das Projekt im Rahmen des Programms „SDG-Partnerships“ durch den Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD).
Ziel des Projektes ist es, ein internationales Austauschprogramm für Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge sowie Forschung im Bereich nachhaltiger ländlicher Entwicklung zu etablieren.
Im Projekt werden Bachelor- und Masterstudien in Zusammenarbeit der beiden Partnerhochschulen durchgeführt. Dabei erhalten Studierende aus Äthiopien die Möglichkeit, ein Thema in Deutschland zu bearbeiten, während Studierende aus Deutschland ihre Abschlussarbeit in Äthiopien durchführen. Eine weitere wichtige Komponente ist die Erarbeitung englischsprachiger Lehrveranstaltungen, mit dem Ziel, vor allem an der HFR mittelfristig einen englischsprachigen Studiengang zu entwickeln. Zunächst sollen die Veranstaltungen als Winter- und Summer Schools Studierenden an der BDU, der HFR und anderen Partneruniversitäten angeboten werden. Darüber hinaus soll das Doktorandenprogramm der BDU hinsichtlich seiner Praxis- und Anwendungsorientierung gestärkt werden, und an der HFR soll ein „Welcoming-System“ für internationale Studieninteressierte entwickelt und implementiert werden. Durch diese Bemühungen will das Projekt die internationalen akademischen Strukturen und die Zusammenarbeit im Bachelor- und Masterstudium zwischen den Partneruniversitäten stärken.
Am Projekt, das bis Ende 2028 läuft, wirken neun Wissenschaftler*innen beider Hochschulen aus den Fachbereichen Energie, Landwirtschaft, Tourismus und Forstwirtschaft mit.
„Wir hoffen, mit diesem Projekt die Internationalisierung der HFR und insbesondere die Etablierung eines englischsprachigen Curriculums an der HFR schneller und konzentrierter voran zu bringen“, so der Projektleiter auf Seiten der HFR, Prof. Dr. Steffen Abele. „Dabei wollen wir insbesondere unseren internationalen Partnern, der BDU und vielen anderen, ein attraktives wissenschaftliches Lehr- und Forschungsprogramm in englischer Sprache anbieten“. Auf der Seite der Bahir Dar University wird das Projekt von Prof. Dr. Zerihun Nigussie, der ein langständiger Forschungspartner von Prof. Abele ist, geleitet.

On March 1 of this year, the "Research and Lecture Exchange for Sustainable Management (ReLeES)" project began its work. Project partners are Bahir Dar University (BDU) in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, and the Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences. The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the "SDG Partnerships" program.
The aim of the project is to establish an international exchange program for bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as to support postgraduate research in the field of sustainable rural development.
The project will offer bachelor's and master's degree programs in cooperation between the two partner universities. Students from Ethiopia will have the opportunity to work on a topic in Germany, while students from Germany will complete their thesis work in Ethiopia. Another important component is the development of English-taught courses, with the goal of developing an English-taught degree program, particularly at the HFR, in the medium term. Initially, the courses will be offered as winter and summer schools to students at the BDU, the HFR, and other partner universities. Furthermore, the BDU's doctoral program will be supported in terms of its practical and application-oriented approach, and a "welcoming system" for prospective international students will be developed and implemented at the HFR. Through these efforts, the project aims to strengthen international academic structures and cooperation in bachelor's and master's degree programs between the partner universities.
Nine researchers from both universities, representing the fields of energy, agriculture, tourism, and forestry, are involved in the project, which will run until the end of 2028.
"With this project, we hope to advance the internationalization of the HFR, and in particular the establishment of an English-language curriculum, more quickly and with greater focus," says Prof. Dr. Steffen Abele, the project leader at the HFR. "In doing so, we want to offer our international partners, the BDU and many others, an attractive academic teaching and research program in English." On the Bahir Dar University side, the project will be led by Prof. Dr. Zerihun Nigussie, a long-standing research partner of Prof. Abele.
